Ubuntu Linux Virtual Console Auto Login tty1 only

Asked by NTNBower in Linux, Linux Administration, Linux Setup

Tags: ubuntu, console, autologin, linux, login

I am using Ubuntu Linux, and have set up a PC that I would like to use as a tn5250 client terminal. Everything works great, the PC boots (with no GUI) present a login prompt - I have them using a generic username and password. And then I have the .bashrc running tn5250 myas400.

I would like for it to auto login to Linux with the generci uname & password and then run the tn5250.

I would also like to be able to press CTRL-F2 and get into a second Virtual console to do admin type stuff without auto running tn5250

Most all info I can find about autologin discusses modifying the /etc/inittab to provide the  auto login. Of which - I dont think Ubuntu uses any more - I think it uses upstart or some thing called upstart. Start Free Trial
