The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

squid (stopping anonymous proxies in squid )
Zone: Linux
Tags: anonymous, squid, block, proxies
Respected Sir,
I am using squid proxy with ADS. it is working excellently.
I am in university as a linux administrator. I had made a policy that no one can use the site www.orkut.com in day time and after 17:30 till 9am it is open.
But the students make use of ANONYMOUS SITES and using these sites they use orkut.
One way to stop this is to see what sites they are using to connect orkut. but as we know that there are number of sites if i will start blocking all the sites it is going to increase the size of the database as a result bit of speed will also be affected. ( as the database will be large and before connecting it will search the database to check whether the particular site is blocked or not.)

I dont want to do in this way is there any othere way in which i can ban this (orkut).
I will be very thankful if anybody can help me out.
thanks in advance
with Regards
Jatender

if your users can get to anonymous proxy's and especially if they connect using ssl there is no way to stop them accessing okurt.

you will have to prevent access to anonymous proxy's,  look at squid guard or dansgard

This is rather a tricky one unfortunately. I'm not aware of anyone who maintains a list of anonymizer sites which squid can reference in order to block. It's almost like trying to block every porn site in the world. As soon as you block 1, another will appear.

If the sites your students are using are not using SSL, there is however an extremely dirty method you can use, which will prevent them from accessing orkut completely. Modern kernels support packet string matching (although it may require a kernel source patch and recompile, depending on which distro you are using). This enables you to drop packets containing any text you specify. You could use a command such as:

iptables -I INPUT -j DROP -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/0 -m string --string "orkut"

Students would still be able to access their anonymizer site, but requests for orkut would be dropped by the proxy server (before squid even receives them).

1. You will have to configure all the browsers to use the proxy for http and https
                                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wpad

2. install dansgaurdian,

3. block all connections not through the proxy server.

Client -> dansgaurdian -> squid -> www

Then add orkut as a banned phrase.
