The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Fedora Core 6: Edimax EW-7128g 802.11 PCI Card (Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g) gets misconfigured after some time
Tags: Red Hat OS and Ralink wifi drivers, Fedora Core 6 and Ralink RT2561/RT61, as detailed in Product name, software trouble since when reinstalling OS and PCI wifi card it works again
I was able to install successfully on my Linux Fedora Core 6 PC an Edimax EW-7128g 802.11 PCI Card (Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g). I was able to connect to my wi-fi router and surf the web without problem through the ra0 interface, even after rebooting the PC. The fact is that this worked only for a few days. One day the wifi connection stopped working and I hadn't changed anything. I reinstalled Fedora Core 6 and the card again from the beggining, and it worked, but again, after a few days the same thing happened and it stopped working.

The problem is that after some time the ra0 interface dissapears from my system. A wmaster0 interface appears instead.

Following I copy the output of several commands I execute on my PC, and also some screenshots of what is shown on my "Network Configuration" tool.

The output of ifconfig:

[root@localhost Linux]# ifconfig
lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

          TX packets:3651 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:6147313 (5.8 MiB)  TX bytes:6147313 (5.8 MiB)

The output of iwconfig:

[root@localhost Linux]# iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

wmaster0  no wireless extensions.

wlan0     IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Retry min limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr=2346 B

Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

If I execute "ifconfig ra0 192.168.0.68 up":

[root@localhost Linux]# ifconfig ra0 192.168.0.68 up
SIOCSIFADDR: The device doesn't exist
ra0: unknown interface: The device doesn't exist
ra0: unknown interface: The device doesn't exist

If I execute "ifconfig wlan0 192.168.0.68 up":

[root@localhost Linux]# ifconfig wlan0 192.168.0.68 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: The device doesn't exist
SIOCSIFFLAGS: The device doesn't exist

If I execute "ifconfig wmaster0 192.168.0.68 up":

[root@localhost Linux]# ifconfig wmaster0 192.168.0.68 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: The operation is not supported
SIOCSIFFLAGS: The operation is not supported

If I execute "iwlist ra0 scanning":

[root@localhost Linux]# iwlist ra0 scanning
ra0       Interface doesn't support scanning.

If I execute "iwlist wlan0 scanning":

[root@localhost Linux]# iwlist wlan0 scanning
wlan0     Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

If I execute "iwlist wmaster0 scanning":

[root@localhost Linux]# iwlist wmaster0 scanning
wmaster0  Interface doesn't support scanning.

See screenshot1.png. This shows how my ra0 device has dissapeared (before it was here as a Wireless Type (Tipo). Instead of that it shows now a ra0.bak device which is unknown (desconocido) and thus I can't edit or modify. Also the wmaster0 device has appeared, it seems to be my Edimax card, but it is considered as an Ethernet card and thus can't configure it to get connected to my Wi-fi router.

See screenshot2.png. This shows how the wmaster0 hardware device that has appeared is how my Linux recognises now the Edimax card (as an Ethernet card).

I'd need a solution to, at least, when this happens, be able to reconfigure my PCI card drivers without having to reinstall Fedora Core 6 from the beggining.

If you need the output of any other command or configuration, don't hesitate to let me know and I will add it to this post.

What kernel version do you have now 'uname -r'?

I suggest that your Fedora updated kernel (if it has Internet access).
And new installed kernel has updated/incompatible drivers.

That's a good idea, I think that it's quite likely to be the solution. I'll investigate further to guess if it's so. I'll try to find out which is the update that makes my interface ra0 get misconfigured. Do kernel updates in Fedora have a special name in the updating tool?. That would help me to trace the upgrade that I must never install to keep my card working properly.

On the other hand, another solution would be to install Fedora Core 8. Do you know if the installation steps of a Wi-Fi card the same for Fedora core 6 and Fedora core 8?. Do both versions share the same drivers?. I'd like to reuse the intallation software (drivers and such) that I have right now, and not coping again with the supplier to get new instructions and software for core 8, this wasn't so easy to get.

> Do kernel updates in Fedora have a special name in the updating tool?

No, kernel updates come to Fedora the same way as all other package updates. Updates are checked at background by 'yum-updatesd' daemon.

You may check is it running with 'service  yum-updatesd status' and 'chkconfig --list yum-updatesd'

To turn it off completely across reboots, run 'chkconfig --level 3 yum-updatesd off', but another solution is to use the original kernel, it should be kept in /boot/ directory, so you are able to choose it in your grub menu while booting (or even better to make it default in /boot/grub/grub.conf)

When new updates are available, you get a notification in Gnome, that asks you, do you wish to apply them. If it was done at least one, you are most likely have a newer kenel version.

> On the other hand, another solution would be to install Fedora Core 8.

Not necessary. Now kernel API is actively changing and most drivers are ported to the new API, some are not good enough, so you must wait more time until they become stable.

> Do you know if the installation steps of a Wi-Fi card the same for Fedora core 6 and Fedora core 8?

I don't have Fedora 8, but probably all is the same.

> Do both versions share the same drivers?

If they use the same kernel version (on Fedora 8 and on Fedora 6 there are different kernel versions available after updates), they have the same drivers.

And you may install the latest kernel (from http://kernel.org/ ) even on Fedora 6 (you should compile the kernel yourself, that's not difficult, but requires some reading).

My recommendation is to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf
and see if you have different boot options available, change 'default=0' to appropriate value. 0 points to 1st 'title', 1 to second etc.

The latest updated Fedora 6 kernel is '2.6.22.14-72.fc6' if you have this line and the older version, like '2.6.22.9-61.fc6', choose the older one.
