How to move user home directory to different drive

In my Windows setup I had all my data files on a separate partition from my OS and applications.

Is it possible to do the same thing in Linux?

I'd like my /home/alan directory tree (or its contents) to be moved to /media/Data (a FAT32 partition) without causing confusion to reign.

Is this practicable?
If not, would it be if I reformatted the partition in a Linux format?
