Hardware:
- Vostro 200, Intel Core 2 Due, 1GB RAM, 160GB SATA. This machine is pretty new from 11/07
OS:
- Fedora 8. (Has installed: VNC, Apache, mySQL, PHP)
I have found this machine has become very slow, and when I use firefox it takes a long time to upload.
Someone connects at night to upload some data so I use VNC. Every morning I cannot do anything cause is too slow and I end up restarting every time. Also the times I connected remotely, is very slow, and one time it made me look bad during a presentation.
I hear constantly the sound of the Hard drive "thinking". The kind of sound it makes when you are saving something. But this is constant all the time, all day.
When I restart the sound is gone, but if I keep this PC on all day and night, the following day I have to go through the same thing.
Since if is idle, and it locks, when I move the mouse to login, it takes like 30 seconds or more for the login to appear again.
Is this a problem of the OS?, as the hardware is pretty good, unless is the HD itself?
I am thinking of moving to Ubuntu, but not to Windows, no way...
