buffer_get_ret: trying to get more bytes 4 than in buffer 0

I am getting the following error when attempting to FTP to a remote server:

buffer_get_ret: trying to get more bytes 4 than in buffer 0
buffer_get_int: buffer error
Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer

I have the key in my known_hosts file and I have the userna,e and password in .netrc.
Has anyone seen this before and have any idea what the cause might be?
