exclude directory with tar and symbolic links

Hi I am trying to exclude the .wine directory and all subdirectories.  But for some reason it is still trying to back it up .  I am trying to back up symbolic links, but wine uses way to many. So I don't want to back up that directory.
tar: pn117490/.wine/dosdevices/c\:/windows/winebrowser.exe: Cannot stat: No such file or directory

I attached an example of what I am doing.

I have tried moving the exclude in different places and still the same result.
