I had a hard time getting a swedish KB work on a Mac running Linux (YellowDog). During the troubleshooting, I found that that version of Gnome would accept the default keymap, while KDE did use some built-in keymaps. Total confusion, naturally... taking into account that Mac KB doesn't have the []}\ etc characters by default. Anyway, I suggest you look through any possible keyboard options in GNOME and try different settings. In KDE I had success once I *disabled* the keymap option, as that led to KDE accepting the default keymap. Which version of GNOME are you using?

The above link may be useful - it talks about a few commands and keymap files/locations. This is YellowDog PPC Linux, of course, but I think most files and commands are kinda standard Linux issue.

Which keyboard layout is loaded at startup? (Default kmap) Is this consistent with your actual KB?
