If you want to reinstall grub again boot into linux and install grub.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI had this working the last 6 months but tried to fix something that wasn't broken :-/
Now I've got win98 installed and it is 5g of 40g hd on /dev/hda and when I've tried to install redhat right after (I think the start is 630cyl) I'm told that I might have problems and will need to create a boot disk. Why? I'm below the 1024 cycl for the boot! I've got win2000 running on /dev/hd5 but when I boot I don't get grub at all but I do get the option to boot into win98 or 2000 but that is from the M$ bootloader. I've tried to reinstall redhat thinking I might have wiped out grub but that isn't the case.
Is there away for me to get the grub working so I can have my tri boot back without having to start from scratch? If I do have to start from scratch, what do I need to do different? I had this working once but am lost as to what is wrong.
Thanks,

I've got the install cd but not a bootable floppy. I took the default install on grub so I'm *assuming* it went to the MBR. I've gotten to my file system by booting linux rescue from cd and mounted /dev/hda2 to /tmp/tmpmount and tried running grub-install which calls /sbin/grub so it crashes since it is /tmp/tmpmount/sbin/grub during rescue. Any links to how to solve this issue?
I'll also try your other link this evening after work. Looks like that will work but I'd really like to figure out (for future reference) how to recover from cd to either make a recovery disk after the fact (for if I ever have to recover someone's data from their box that is having trouble), and how to install grub at this point so I can learn what I'm doing or did wrong.
Thanks
Oh, you mentioned bootable floppy not recovery, I can do that from the cd with rawrite correct?

I think you install the grub boot loader in your linux partition. Can you tell me where you install grub? on hda2 or mbr?

You can use either grub or Ms loader to boot. Have you got linux bootable floppy? or if you have linux cd... you can do both.
If you want to use the ms boot loader check this question.
