Sounds to me like your X configuration is hosed. I'd suggest running the X config tool (Xconfigurator on 7.x or redhat-config-xfree86 on 8.0 or later) from a console login. I don't know if your monitor is one in the pick list, but if it isn't you can get the horizontal and vertical rates from the monitor docs and use those for the monitor specifications.
