The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Constraints in NT_Linux partitions

Asked by aifans in Linux Setup

Hi,

i just got a second hand Compaq notebook from someone else, with the following specs:-

-Pentium II 300 MHz
-128 RAM
-6 GB hdd

(The notebook didn’t come with the Windows installation cd or any user manual )

i’m going to make it a NT server & Red Hat Linux 6.1 dual boot machine.  i’ve referred to dozens of resources & found there are different ways of doing the partitions. i understand that NT should be installed in the 1st partition, followed by Linux.  Some resource suggest installing the LILO in MBR, then use a DOS command to adjust something. Some suggest never install the LILO during the 1st round of Linux installation ‘koz NT boot manager not compatible with LILO.

i find 1 of the resources interesting. The author suggests the system is better to be configured as following:-

-300 MB for partition 1: DOS/Win 9x (data xchange area 4 NT & Linux )
-2 GB for partition 2: NT server
-The rest of partitions : Linux
-If need to install Windows applications, then in a separate partition

i’m not sure which work fine 4 my Compaq notebook.  But i’ve constraints about the following:-

-Each time i boot the notebook, I notice the Win 98 flying windows screen flashes across
for a very short while, then straight away goes into DOS.  The MS-DOS in this notebook
seems ‘incomplete’.  The command ‘dir/w’ or ‘dir’  could work, but there is no other directories or any system files, except only Command.com  .   Then I had tried other DOS cmd
like cd, md, …. all could not work.

Is there anything wrong with the DOS ?

-Is it possible to xtract the DOS from a Win98 installation cd & put into this Compaq
 notebook ?

-If I manage to format the hdd, then, should I partition the hdd with a partition tool(e.g.
Partition Magic) 1st, followed by installing DOS, NT server & Linux; or,
should I install DOS & NT 1st, then only do the partition ? i’m really confused on the  sequence.

-If according to practical experiences, which methods would u suggest for creating a  dual boot
 machine ?

Appreciate if any would help. Thx.
