Linux loading

I have a dual boot system of pink tie linux and windows98.When I boot linux it starts booting but stops at 'finding module dependencies' and doesnt proceed further.What could be the reason

h/w problem. The boot is unable to find modules(or drivers) for your particular device. To avoid this keep pressing 'I' during start up. Then chose applications that you want to run. Or just try reinstallation of another distribution of linux like redhat.

You didnt recompile your kernel by any chance? If you did you may have missed a few steps :)
