Since this is apparently an RHEL system why didn't you just use up2date and let it upgrade the kernel and everything else?

I want to upgrade Linux Kernel. I currently have Kernel version 2.4.21-4 and i want to upgrade to 2.4.21-20. I downloaded the rpm and installed it by the following command:
$ rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.i686.r
Now when i restart system and select kernel ver kernel-2.4.21-20 i got the following error on startup.
Creating block devices
VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00
Am i missing some steps regarding upgrade.
Plz reply asap.

Have we say anything about grub.conf.anaconda?
See my first post for possible places.
Or Your system is using LILO? Then it's /etc/lilo.conf and after modifying it You have to run: /sbin/lilo
But first find out which bootloader You use?
You will see it on the machine boot, it either shows LILO boot: or nice menu with GRUB version.

edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst (or /boot/grub/grub.conf or /etc/grub.conf)
alter the 'root=LABEL=/' to same value as is on eralier kernel specification.
