The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Upgrade issues from RH enterprise 3 to 4 - wrong arch

Hi

I'm currently trying to upgrade from Redhat enterprise3 (redhat enterprise ES3) to Redhat enterprise 4. It is on a test server which is a HP ProLiant DL380 G4, which has dual Intel Xeon EM64T cpus.
I have both the 32 bit x86 version and the Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology version of the CDs.

I started upgrading with the 64 bit version, which on the CD reads "For 64 bit AMD64 and Intel EM64T. After reading the existing packages it gave me the following error:
The arch of the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES you are upgrading to appears to be i386 which does not match your previously installed arch of x86_64. This is not likely to succeed. (...)

(I thought this machine would be an x86_64, and not i386 (I thought i386 referred to 32 bit?) Please feel free to explain the difference between these two)

Out of interest, I tried the 32 bit version and this continued and did not complain on wrong arch. It would allow me to perform the upgrade. (Isn't the 32 bit version a i386?)
I was pretty sure that what was there before was a 64 bit version - and would think so from the error msg above. Why is it that it makes no comment when I  try the 32 bit (if a 64 bit is installed)?

Have I got the wrong version of the CDs or do I simply have to do a new installation if I want the 64bit version installed?

Regards
KMS
