when compiling from source, after you run
tar zxvf firefox-1.5.tar.gz
or whatever tar.gz file you have
cd into the newly created directory
then you just usually need to remember a couple of things
first always look for an INSTALL file which usually shows what commands to run to install the program.
second, 99% of the time you just need to remember
./configure
make
make install
Those three commands will usually get your program compiled and installed. you might receive an error during the ./configure process pointing out any pre-reqs your missing. those usually come in the devel rpms though.

Easy way is to find a RPM for your Distro and then "rpm -Uvh MozillaFirefox-1.5.i586.rp m"
