There seems to be some information on the net about this card an linux in general, it seems like something to do with the HostRAID.

Have you tried the latest driver from the adaptec website?

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=%2FProduct%2FASC-29320-R&prodkey=ASC-29320-R

you should be able to use different drivers on the installation by passing the dd option in the boot prompt.

by: AoE999Posted on 2006-05-15 at 06:27:58ID: 16682141

exactly what i did, linux dd
then i use rawrite to put the image on the floppy and after it loads the driver, it goes back to Loading aic79xx driver.....

and stay there for ever

Sorry, missed that bit :-)

Can you boot from the CD into rescue mode?

Also, what version of Centos?
check this out; http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=674

Also, have you rechecked the basics? Is the SCSI bus properly terminated and the drive connected properly and is the drive seen in the Adaptec screen?

Did you try the redhat enterprise 4 drivers? The versions you list are for standard redhats which are old (probably using a 2.4 kernel and not 2.6) and wouldn't be for your CentOS.

by: AoE999Posted on 2006-05-17 at 06:15:46ID: 16698763

sorry i missed out listed 4, yes i did 4 under i686
and it didn't work either, here is what else i tried
adaptec onboard which same as 29160

then i put in 29320, then 39160
it said the driver on the floppy does not contain the driver i need, and had me picked on of it on the list, i did, and it said no hard drive found

rindi, you think it might be the kernel that is not recognizing it ?

by: rindiPosted on 2006-05-17 at 07:10:55ID: 16699334

The kernel should recognize it if you supply the correct floppy. Did you follow these instructions exactly, you say you used rawrite, I don't think that is required?

http://www.centos.org/docs/4/html/rhel-ig-x8664-multi-en-4/ap-driverdisk.html

Actually that adapter should get recognized even without an extra floppy, but you might have to compile your own kernel with builtin support for that card. You'd need an installed working version of the OS to do that. If so I'd suggest you install CentOS to an IDE HDconnected to the PC, then when installed and when you have built the kernel to support your aic79xx, you could then copy your installation to the SCSI system.

by no mean, i am not an expert in linux, i am installing this so my friend can configure it to act as our mail server
i could get him to compile the driver for what you said

why i did use rawrite ? cuz the driver i downloaded from adaptec are img at 1.40Meg, so in order to fit on the floppy, i just can't copy it over using windows
i need to use rawrite to put the image on the floppy
i even tried the older version of CentOS 4 and 4.2, same goes

this system is an IBM Intellistation M Pro 6850 dual xeon 1.7, i search IBM site, they don't even have a driver for linux

by: rindiPosted on 2006-05-17 at 08:43:43ID: 16700186

I had thought you were using linux to create the floppy, not windoze. Do you have a knoppix CD? Try booting that CD if you do and check if it can load the driver. If that is the case you could also use knoppix instead of CentOS for your server. It is pretty easy to install it to HD and being based on Debian, you have the most apps working with it. If you do use knoppix, you'll have to be aware that you might not have the most stable setup, as it uses the "testing" version of debian. I've nevertheless never had problems with that, though.
