since they went to 1.5 and newer, firefox no longer needs an installation program. you simply untar and then run.
so copy the files to where you want firefox installed, and then untar the archive. You'll also want to update your pointers in KDE or GNOME or whatever other window manager you are using to point to the new location of the firefox binary.

First, what linux distros and versions are you running? What GUI? If it is KDE, you need to find out where firefox was installed to. Normally that will be /usr/lib/firefox-Version. You'll probably also see the old versions here and those will still be linked to your desktop. You will now just have make a new link in KDE which points the firefox file where it got installed to.
Of course if you are using a linux distro which works with a proper packet manager like debian (apt-get), gentoo (emerge) or fedora-core (redhat/CentOS etc, the utility yum), you can use these tools to do the update for you automatically. I wouldn't just update firefox, but whatever else is updatable to.
