Question

Small Fujitsu Laptop--What type of linux to use? Here's what I need to do...

Asked by: lanehart

I recently inherited a very small and rather old Fujitsu B2131 laptop. It had Windows 98se or Win 2k, but the OS is messed up so I want to do a fresh install. I have decided that Linux might be a nice option to try. I am TOTALLY NEW at Linux, and have never ran it before.

The Fujitsu B2131 has:
Celeron 400mhz
64mb RAM
6 GB HDD
External Floppy
(1) USB
10 base T NIC
56k Modem
(HAD windows 98 se)
-->apparently it also has a touch screen (but I don't have to be able to use this; it would be cool, though)

I would like to be able to use my WiFi card to connect to my AP here at home or at the coffee shop with my Linksys WPC11 PC Card (which this also has a slot for).

I need to then be able to run Internet, remote desktop (to my WinXp Pro computer here at home) and access Word documents. It would be a DEFINITE plus to be able to fileshare w/ my computers while at home (if possible?). It would also be NICE to be able to use my USB flash drive.

Is there a good version of Linux that will support these things and run on this small laptop? Is there a good website where it will be instructions as to how to install this version of Linux WITHOUT using a CD ROM drive (over the wired network?) or start it somehow w/ the floppy disk. If it would be helpful or necessaryk, I can remove the harddrive and use my 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter to connect to desktop and install or transfer files.

Thanks for your help!

Are there any special setup instructions since I have never done this before? Will I have to use advanced features to install these 'extra' components, or will those be automatically recognized like plug and play devices?

thanks!
