Question

Different desktop backgrounds for each workspace? (FC 6)

Asked by: s_turner99

I performed a clean installation of Fedora Core 6 a couple days ago.  Seems to be working fine so far, but I want each of the 4 workspaces to have its own desktop background/wallpaper.

Right-clicking on the desktop brings a pop-up, and at the bottom it says "Change Desktop Background".  When I select that option and choose a background, all 4 workspaces get the new background.

Earlier versions of Gnome (from previous Fedora Core installations) had a checkbox option "Apply changes only to this workspace", or something like that.  I can't seem to find that option anywhere in this new Fedora Core 6 installation.

thanks,
S.T.

(Note: I won't have access to this FC6 Linux machine again until mid-next week, so it'll be a few days before I can try your suggestions.)

Hi,

You may want to try wallpapoz (http://wallpapoz.akbarhome.com/).  If you yum for Fedora Extra is setup properly you should be able to install just by using "yum install wallpapoz".

by: nedvisPosted on 2006-12-21 at 16:40:19ID: 18184545

You should be able to select different pictures/wallpapers  for each of your desktops ( Workplaces)
through KDE  Control Center and its Configure-KDesktop module.
The easyest way is to right-click on desktop and select an option "Configure Desktop..."
Once you have Kdesktop configuration window from uper left corner select "Background" ( in the left view pane ).
In the right-hand pane at very top of the  window and right below the window title "Change the background settings"
you should have  "Setting for desktop" drop-down button  displayed.
If it reads "All desktops" you can just click on radio button and select desktop ( by the desktop number:  Desktop 1, Desktop 2 etc.) you want make change to. The select the wallpaper picture you want to be displayed for that workplace.

Furthermore, there is a feature where KDE can differentiate workplaces by their background wallpapers in so called
Desktop Pager   instead of having workplace numbers or workplace names displayed in Desktop Pager in Panel bar at the bottom of the screen.
Once you've selected desired wallpapaers for your workplaces ( desktops)
right-click on Desktop Pager and select "Pager Options" which will display context menu where you can select option
"Desktop Wallpaper" ( besides "Elegant" and " Trasparent' ) . Now you can distinguish your workplaces not only by
desktop/workplaces number but by wallpapers too which will be displayed as miniature thumbnails in Desktop Pages.

good luck and enjoy your KDE

Thanks for reply, nedvis...

But it's Gnome, not KDE.  (Gnome Desktop version 2.16.0 distributed by Red Hat, build date 09/04/2006.  It's the default that showed up after basic install of Fedora Core 6).

Right clicking on desktop brings a pop-up with "Create Folder", "Create Launcher", "Create Document", "Clean Up by Name", "Keep Aligned", "Paste" (grayed out), and "Change Desktop Background".

Any ideas?

thanks

Unfortunately ,"Currently (Gnome 2.8) when you apply a background, it becomes the background for all workspaces. " http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8848
Solution from http://wallpapoz.akbarhome.com/  ( as per  slyong suggestion) would be the way to go.

Points to slyong for suggesting wallpapoz so quickly: 225.

Points to nedvis for showing that Gnome doesn't support multiple backgrounds by default, which essentially explains why wallpapoz is the only possible solution: 275.

I think I like KDE more than Gnome because different backgrounds help me to quickly figure out which workspace I'm in.  And because it looks pretty good when you show your Windows friends how productive you can be with multiple workspaces, each one immediately identifiable as a different workspace because it has a different background.  (I think Windows can do the same thing?  But how?  I guess I'll go look...)

Anyway, thanks for the replies!

S.Turner

P.S. - How do I change from Gnome to KDE??  ;-)

by: nedvisPosted on 2007-01-02 at 13:46:18ID: 18231321

Q- How do I change from Gnome to KDE??
A- First make sure you have KDE 3.5.5 installed ( as root you can run :  yum  -y  install  kde*  )
The once you boot your PC and get logon screen in the lower left corner click on "Session"
and check KDE the press ENETER , after you type username and password.
Here is the login screen snapshot : http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=749&slide=22
Fedora Core 6 desktopa manager will ask whether you want to make KDE default desktop environment.
You can select between make it  default option or run KDE just for that session.

 good luck
and thank you for the points awarded to my answer , but somehow I think slyong deserves more points than me.

Here you'll find couple KDE 3.5.5 snapshot abou customisations i used to make to my KDE .
I did it on my PCBSD 1.3 as well as on my PCLinuxOS 0.92b computers but you can do the same because
what you see is what one can essentially do through  KDE COntrol Center ( Themes, Look and Feel, Behavior, etc. unter Appearence section of the KDE Control center)

Thanks for the additional info on switching to KDE, ned!  Your screen shots look very good!

Also on the topic of sylong's answer versus your answer:
True, slyong's answer did come first.  But it was...brief.  And I didn't really want to load wallpapoz, I wanted to use Gnome's control panel to have different backgrounds -- just like KDE does.  Then you provided the link explaining that Gnome does not support different backgrounds.  In my opinion, that extra effort deserves a few extra points.  Then, even after the points were awarded, you came back with extra info on how I can install KDE.  You worked for those extra points, see?  Just one guy's opinion...

peace,
S.T.

P.S. - Incredibly, the message thread on the Gnome support forum included comments that different backgrounds were not very important, and that many other more important things needed to be worked on first.  Right now, on my Gnome desktop, the windows are "rubbery", they distort when you drag them and then wobble a little bit after being placed.  As if they were made of Jell-O.  Apparently the "rubbery windows effects" are more important than unique desktop backgrounds?  Give me a break!!

<quote> different backgrounds were not very important<quote>
I don't think so and I cant leave without good wallpapers and havily tweked workspaces on my machine(S). Otherwise I would be unable to distingish what is what and waht workstation I'm working on at thje moment ( I'm using 2 PC KVM switch )
Have a look at my desktops :
