What version Ubuntu do you have?
Ubuntu does not have all packages available by default. You must enable the "universe" repository
to be able to install software you need ( gcc, g++ , and make ).
To enable the universe for Ubuntu Dapper Drake:
1. Open /etc/apt/sources.list:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Add the following lines to the end of the file:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/
deb http://security.ubuntu.com
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/
3. Save the file ( Ctrl + O ) and close nano ( Ctrl + X )
4. Run:
sudo apt-get update
and finally rerun command:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
You would be better adding extra repositories using the Synaptic Package Manager. As new Linux user you may find it more user-friendly to add extra repositories through the Package Manager and select desired packages from there
Synaptic is just graphical front-end for the apt-get commandline package manager .
Please take time to read this:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wik
There you'll find also list of repositories.
On your panel, click on: System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. A screen will pop up asking for a password, enter your password there and press 'Enter' on your keyboard. The Synaptic Package Manager will appear. Click on 'Search', then enter your search value, which is 'g++' and click on 'search'. The available packages to choose from should appear. Just right-click on the desired package, and left-click on 'Mark for Installation'. Than after that, click on 'Apply' and you should all be set.
