I tried the Ubuntu 7.04 CD but I wasn't able to move my data off with that - couldn't connect to Windows network. I guess I'll try Knoppix...
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI was upgrading using gksu "update-manager -c" and when the files were installing, my computer when into power saving mode and the screen powered off. Well, when I came back, the screen would not wake up no matter what I did!! So I was forced to hard power cycle.
When I booted up, it went through GRUB just fine (dual boot) but after that, nothing. The Linux kernal doesn't uncompress and boot. The screen just sits there with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen. No prompt, just a blinking cursor.
Is there any way to rescue this? Can I reinstall Ubuntu without loosing all the data?

The Linux Live CD which will flowlessly detect and connect to Windows workgroup shares ( so you can rescue data and files) is
freshly released CentOS 5.o Live CD with which I did quite a lot tests .
You can download CD image iso file and burn this (almost) perfect Linux rescue DC:

Not that I want to undermine Knoppix Live CD ability to do the job for you but CentOS implementation of ( avahi I think) network
discovery service is awome.
Thanks!

The file system should still be intact. You could always boot up using a live linux cd like Knoppix to get your data off, then reinstall Ubuntu.
