Vmware tools on Ubuntu 9.04 (Kubuntu) doesn't affect mouse/graphics performance
I've set up a VM (1.5GB RAM allocated, 25 GB HD space) on an ESXi server with Ubuntu 9.04 Server as my guest OS. When I installed Kubuntu and used that as my GUI, I noticed that the performance is terrible. Choppy mouse and the graphics cause a great deal of lag.
I installed VMWare tools to solve this issue and have run the command vmware-toolbox, which brings up the properties window. The instructions I've found to this point state that I should restart my kdm session which I've attempted to do by using sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart. This ends my kdm session, but does not restart a new session.
It kicks me out to the black screen stating "Starting K Display Manager:kdm". Underneath that text it shows different services starting with the last being "Checking battery state". At this point the cursor appears (but no command line). I can type whatever I'd like, but the system is unresponsive and I end up resetting my vm.
I have also set VMWare-toolbox to automatically start with KDM, but that doesn't seem to make any difference either. I would really like to be able to graphically access the server through the console, but the performance issues are a serious hinderance...
Any ideas on why VMWare-toolbox wouldn't be helping here?
