Backup Strategy for Linux Server

I am a Linux Newbie, and need step by step instructions for using DD to create a baseline backup for a Debian - Lenny server.
It would be helpful if the instructions could instruct how to:
1. Find what the system calls the flash drive: (sdb, sdb1 etc)
2. Mount and enable the system to auto recognized the device so it does not need to be mounted each time it is plugged in.
3. Format and partition a USB flash drive for backups.
4. use dd to create an image of that server. (What is the command to do that?)
5. automate that backup job.
6. references/ instructions on how to use that image to restore for the future.
This is a huge question experts, and I realize that. But this step by step for Debian Lenny is not readily available and will most likely be referenced by other newbies in the future.
