SharePoint content editor cannot retrieve properties
We run SharePoint Portal server 2003 and, on certain areas, we have been unable to edit content.
When we try to edit or add content either using source editor or rich-text editor, we encounter the following pop-up errors:
"cannot retrieve properties at this time"
"save failed"
On other areas in the same portal, content editing works ok. This problem surfaced unexpectedly and sometime since mid August, 2006 as our environment was not changed recently. Prior to this time, all content editing worked properly.
We already tried:
Unassigning IP addresses
Assigning host headers based on the FQDN
Applying W2K3 sp1
Applying SPPS 2.0 sp2
moving DLL's out of the bin folder.
removing SSL (temporarily)
Still no luck. Please help. Thanks.

I have found a solution after speaking with Microsoft Technical support. They were able to duplicate our problem using our web.config file.
The culprit was in an http handlers section of the file. I.e.
<httpHandlers>
<clear />
<add verb="*" path="/_vti_bin/*.aspx" type="System.Web.UI.PageHa ndlerFacto ry, System.Web, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d 50a3a" />
<add verb="*" path="*.aspx" type="Microsoft.SharePoint .Applicati onRuntime. SharePoint HandlerFac tory, Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=11.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e 9429c" />
By removing the first line, "<clear />" the problem was fixed.
I am waiting for a for more information from Microsoft on how this could cause the issue.
