I have been working with personal computers for some time now. The most common request I have from parents was "how can I protect my kids from the shady sides of internet?".
K9 WebProtection from Bluecoat is a possible solution for everyone with that question.
The software is free and can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this article. To install and implement this, you don't have to have any computer skills, it is all run from a simple "wizard" installation.
During the installation, you will be prompted to enter administrator password. This password is used to gain admin access to the program and to view the blocked sites. When you select a password, you should keep it to yourself and don't let anyone know it.
Once the installation is done, you actually don't need to do more, because the default blocking rule is enabled and working.
Try and access some shady site, you will notice that the original site is replaced by the K9, from where you have some options.
All of the visited web pages, even the ones that are blocked, will be registered, so that you, administrator, have a clear view of the things happening in your own home and help prevent them, before anything happens.
We have been testing it for a while and it is something we are going to implement in our own company, with the help of Bluecoat.
Some of the technical respects, that differ from any other web blocker:
Service-based filtering - It receives and rates over 80 million requests every day, making it the most accurate content filtering database available.
Dynamic Real-Time Rating" (DRTR) - DRTR can determine the category of a URL on the fly, without human intervention. (saves you a lot of time, and it does not influence your internet browsing speed)
Automatic updating - Automatic updates of the K9 Web Protection application ensure that you are always protected by the latest features. (Updates are free, and generally doesn't require any of your attention.)
