You should have the option in the program to run at start up. Look at the options in the program for such a selection. Is this on a Windows OS? if so, click on the start button, then choose run, and type msconfig.  In this there will be an option called startup. This will show all the processes, programs ect. that are run, or that you can disable at startup. If you start making changes here though, you're better off creating a backup (you will see this option in msconfig) to assure yourself you don't option out of anything vital. Let me know if this helps!

If this didn't help, then here is what you need to do.
Start button, choose run and type regedit

from here click
 -HKey_Local_Machine
        -Software
             - Microsoft
                    -Windows
                         -CurrentVersion
                              -Run

Then right click on the box on the right in any open space and choose 'new' and 'string value'

Enter a name, prefereable the name of the program

right click on this new name and choose modify.
in the value data box, enter the path that the .exe is located (ex. c:\progra~1\access~1\wordpad.exe) and click ok. You can then X out of all windows and the program will start on reboot.

Since you are asking for DOS info:
c:
cd \
edit autoexec.bat

Presupposing that there is a path to DOS to reach edit, and that the DOS is late enough to have edit.

WHat OS, which program?

Remember that you may have to explicitely tell a 2K OS to parse autoexec.bat... Setting it to 'RUN' in the reg is the best way, as duffbk4 said. While yer there, you can remove any other little treats like RealPlayer engines <g>

edfair, very few questions in this area are about msdos.  Most questions here are answered with shell scripts that we tailor for the users target OS.

editing autoexec.bat is very easy:

it is on the root-directory of c:\ if you want to edit on the dos-shell, enter

edit c:\autoexec.bat

if want to edit it with the win-editor, open explorer and change to directory c:\ then klick on the file with right mouse buttom and click on edit. if the file doesn't exist (propably at winnt, win2k, winxp) klick with right mouse buttom into the white field and klick to new -> textfile and then name it autoexec.bat.

the command you have to add into the file is (if your program is called prog.exe and is saved in d:\myprog):

d:\myprog\prog.exe

but you could also make a link to the autostart-folder of your start-menu.

You can also try adding the shortcut to that program in the Windows Startup folder....

Right Click on Start - Open
Double click on Programs.
Look for Startup folder in it (create if not found) and paste the shortcut to that program(that u want to start with windows) in it.

Hope this might help u....

@tech2Support: "but you could also make a link to the autostart-folder of your start-menu" - "You can also try adding the shortcut to that program in the Windows Startup folder...."

isn't that the same? perhaps the directory is called startup in english and not autostart, but i think you think of the same as me, don't you?
