Question

replacing a string within a file using dos commands

Asked by: david_d

Hello,

I am attempting to write a dos batch file which will replace a string within a file.  I have utilised the FIND command to find the strings within the file.  However I am unable to replace the string with another.  Do any of you know of a command where I can replace a string with another one in a file.

This is the find command that I have used.

find /i "%%mypath%%"  "c:\program files\mydir\my.ini"

How can I get the string that the FIND command returns to overwrite all occurences of %mypath% within the my.ini file?  If it can be done?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

David.

You'll have to loop through it and add the lines you're not changing and change the ones you are:

----------ReplaceIt.bat----------------
for /f %%a in (File.txt) do call :process %%a

:process
if [%1]==[C:\Folder1] goto replace
echo %1 >> NewFile.txt
goto end

:replace
echo "C:\Folder2" >> NewFile.txt

:end

Without "delims=" the FOR loop will set %%a to only the first word of each line,  losing the rest of the info on every line.

time willing i'll look for a replace, or bounty canb probably fix this one up better than me jumping in.

Yupper, indeed,  that's the way i was thinnin' about goin'

Takes a few seconds to write a
     set line=%line:oldpath=newone%
that correctly handles the target line to be changed,

Takes a few hours to try to handle blank lines getting lost in the FOR,  lines with spaces getting changed to "ECHO is OFF",  lines with > getting dropped with parts of them appended to a file somewhere, and the list of maladies goes on.

WELLL,

Here's an old VB replace I wrote that may be a bit better.  The batch sets up a VB script on the fly that is a general purpose replace function that has much less problem with special characters.  The type that should have been included as a utility in DOS 2.3 but wasn't.
M¢ wants us to change intirely to VB script so they can yank it out from under our feet with .net and force us to buy Visual Stud - - -  oops,  I digress.

Then the VB script can be called as often as needed in a script to to do the actual work of several replacements.  It's in the form of a filter, like DOS's "SORT" except i gave it NO support for passing it arguments for input or output file.  You must redirect a file as input to it, or use type or more and pipe the result to it.  You can read output on the screen or you can redirect output to a file or pipe it to another replace command.

Enjoy,

minor change:
I tested this (shouldda dont it first, i know,  but most of it was tested before . . . )
anyways, it properly left many lines with DOS special characters untouched, HOWEVER:
The first time i ran it DOS said:
The system cannot find the path specified.
Roughly translated:  "Fool, wait till the .vbs script is finished being written before you try to use it."

I don't remember that from before and it didn't happen the second time i tried it (file already in place)  but i recommend adding a short (one to two second) pause to prevent problems in the future:  This can be anywhwere after the script write and before using it, i prefer the small change below.

Enjoy,

Everyone, thanks for you help so far.

k_2k,

When I try your example, I get "The system cannot find the path specified".

I forgot to add that I am trying to run this under Windows NT.  Could that cause this problem?

David.

No,  this should work fine under anything from 95 through XP.

I get same error first run only on my XP box at home.
Trouble is in write-caching on fast machines - we told the system to write a file and it returned control to us before it was done.

The pause as shown in http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/MSDOS/Q_20857863.html#10167723 should eliminate the problem.
