Question

DOS USB Driver Problems

Asked by: mhaenel

I am trying to create a DOS boot disk that includes USB drivers for a USB CDROM drive.  I have tried DUSE and usb_cd.sys with no luck.  For DUSE, I used the following command in CONFIG.SYS:

devicehigh=duse.exe

In AUTOEXEC.BAT I have put this command:

LH MSCDEX.EXE /D:USBCDROM /L:W

The PC boots and tries to load DUSE but then stops and goes no further. When I tried USB_CD.SYS, in CONFIG.SYS I used this command:

device=usb_cd.sys /D:MSCD001

In AUTOEXEC.BAT, I used this command:

LH MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /L:W

As the PC boots, I get an "invalid parameter" error after the USB_CD.SYS loads and then MSCDEX says the driver is not loaded.

Any ideas?

Which OS is installed on your PC ?
Do USB devices work properly in it ?

IBM's site gives these instructions to install usb_cd.sys :

Installation Instructions
-------------------------
 1. Make a DOS boot diskette.
 2. Copy the USB_CD.SYS file to the DOS boot diskette.
 3. Copy the MSCDEX.EXE file from your operating system directory to the
    DOS boot diskette.
 4. Add the following statement to the config.sys file on the DOS boot
    diskette:
         DEVICE=USB_CD.SYS
 5. Add the following statement to the autoexec.bat on the DOS boot
    diskette:
         MSCDEX.EXE /D:TEAC-CDI
 6. Boot to DOS using this DOS boot diskette to use IBM USB Portable
    CD-ROM Drive.
It is possible that IBM driver is not compatible with your drive.

Hi mhaenel,
While we are assuming that one vendor's USB driver will work for another device of the same type, (and that is normally the case) specifically what make and model of USB CD-ROM are you using?
usual disclaimers apply.

It is a Teac CD-210PU.  It came with a FD with USB_CD.SYS on it, but I have the same problem with it that I have with the other one, invalid parameter, right after it tries to load the driver and then mscdex reports "no driver loaded".

I really appreciate any help/advice you can give us.  Thanks!

I would recommend starting with the Teac/IBM driver supplied by your drive manufacturer (USB_CD.SYS) and using the installation instructions suggested by 'paraghs.'  Also, with any driver, make sure to unplug any other USB devices connected to your computer while using the driver.  If you only have a USB keyboard and mouse let us know that so we can give you additional steps you need to take.

You can try using the newest version of the DUSE USB driver (4.9) and refer to the included User's Guide for help (download @ http://www.pocketech.net/downloads/duse_4_9.zip).  I have four and a half pages of hard-to-find additional documentation on using DUSE by example written by the authors, also.  Available at http://www.intergate.com/~jrey/usbwdos/.

For the most complete info I could find on Panasonic's USBASPI.SYS and USBCD.SYS drivers try this posting: http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/15261.html.

Let us know what your progress is and in the meantime I will see if I can track down more detailed info about USB_CD.SYS....

Hey, I just found a driver from the German Teac site for your specific model.  Read the readme file(s) and go from there.  Download it at: http://www.teac.de/dspd/downloads/driver/drv_pcusb010w.exe .

I had the same problem with an old VAIO because the card controller (a Ricoh) driver was written by Carsoft and Cardsoft does not write DOS drivers.

I solved the problem with a generic DOS PCMCIA driver written by Panasonic for their Toughbook.
