The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Transferring files from old DOS machine

Asked by Coolmain in MS DOS

Tags: , ,

HERE IS MY PROBLEM:
I have 3 machines
(1) a 12 years old DOS 6.21 PC
(2) a 5 years old WinXP pc and
(3) a new Solaris 10 x86 system.

WHAT I WANT TO DO: I want to transfer the data files from the two older Msoft machines onto the new Solaris system over ETHERNET.

MACHINE (1):
It has DOS 6.21.
It also has Windows for Worklgroups 3.11 which does NOT seem to work.  I get the message "WORKGROUP.SYS missing".  Also if I try to use NET USE from the DOS prompt, I get "Do you want to start the workstation"  When I try to start it I get "IFSHLP" missing - or something like that.

This machine appears to be successfully networked using ETHERNET (10BaseT).  The driver of the NIC seems to execute properly.

MACHINE (2):
This is a Windows XP Laptop connected to Ethernet.

MACHINE (3):
This is a new Solaris 10 x86 system connected to Ethernet.

MY QUESTIONS:
(1) Is there anywhay to create 'single floppy solution' for the DOS machine, whereby upon boot up the floppy will give the PC the basic ability to transfer its files?
(2) Is there a small SAMBA client (or should that be 'server'?) that I can load onto the DOS machine from a single floppy.
(3) Is there a small FTP client (or should that be 'server'?) that can be loaded from a single floppy onto the DOS machine.
(4) Is there a simple way to give my Windows 3.11 networking ability?
