The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

A good starting point would be simple output redirection in DOS, where you can redirect output of some DOS programs into some other device, not just to CONSOLE (which is by default, as to print output to screen).

For example:
  DIR c:\folder\
will print you output on screen, while this:
  DIR c:\folder\>filelist.txt
will create a file named "filelist.txt" with directory listing. And this:
  DIR c:\folder\>>filelist.txt
will not rewrite, but ADD output to filelist.txt

Employing some switches of DIR command, you may filter your output to best fit your needs for further processing. For example:
  DIR c:\folder\ /A:D /D /B>folders.txt
will give you a list of all folders, without unneeded summary info. Then you may process this file with another BATCH file, like this:
  FOR /f %%D IN (folders.txt) DO call process.bat %%D
It will go line by line through folders.txt file, and use folder name for further processing, depends on what you want to do.

Hope this helps a bit :)

Try This

8:
@echo off
setlocal
set source=c:\Temp
pushd "%source%"
if exist "Filelist.csv" del "Filelist.csv"
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in ('dir /a /b /-p /o:gen 2^>NUL') do echo %%a >>Filelist.csv
popd
Endlocal

@echo off
setlocal
set source=c:\Temp
pushd "%source%"
if exist "Filelist.csv" del "Filelist.csv"
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in ('dir /a /b /-p /o:gen 2^>NUL') do echo %%a >>Filelist.csv
popd
Endlocal

is exactly the same as just

dir /a /b /o:gen c:\temp > filelist.csv

Talk about a sledgehammer to crack a nut :-)  (though very useful way to work on the results of the dir command of course)

Hmm, you wanted a sledgehammer rather than a simple solution then obviously :-)  What was wrong with my solution btw (except I didn't call the example filename ".csv" on the end?

The answer to the question was perfect.  It may have been a sledgehammer, but my intent is to run a batch file in a Citrix environment that would list all files in the folder.  Over a period of a couple of weeks 400 + files will be received in a certain folder and I was looking for a way to report on when they came in based on the date stamp.  I initially said CSV (could have been TXT); I just needed an output that I could analyze.  I can write a procedure in VBA, but don't think or don't know how this works in a Citrix environment.

Thanks for your assistance.  Exactly what I wanted.
