Understanding the TELNET command

I just set up my home network for RDP.  I've been experimenting with TELNET command from a remote machine directed at my home computer:

TELNET 199.45.XX.XX 3389

When I run this command, the screen goes blank for about a minute, and then the following message appears, "Connection to host lost."  I think this an indicator that I was connected (at least temporarily).  Here's the part that I don't understand: If I am connected, why can't I execute one of the TELNET commands (display, open...)?Start Free Trial
