Reading & Converting Old DoubleSpace Hard Disk in Windows XP

Asked by chefelf in MS DOS, Windows 95 Operating System, General Microsoft Operating Systems

I have a really old hard drive (Seagate ST1126A SWIFT MODEL 94354-126) from my computer from about 1990-91.  This hard drive is FAT formatted and is using the DoubleSpace compression system.

I've been researching for a few days to try to figure out how I can get this data from this drive onto my current machine (running Windows XP).  The best explanation I've found (which I have since lost the link to) is to try to get access to this via Virtual PC.

I have Virtual PC installed but what I don't understand is this:  If I can get Virtual PC to run DOS 6.0 or Windows 95, how do I then get it to A) recognize the attached hard drive and B) copy the files off of that hard drive to my computer in a format I can then read in Windows XP?

Thank you in advance for any help you could give me!
