Need a way of capturing the output to LPT1 and sending it to a file.

Asked by jvanderw in MS DOS

We have a dos based programed that runs all day and night and it;s basic function is to be a gateway for transactions coming in and going out of our facility. Hard coded into the program is instructions for this program to print information regarding certain documents to a printer. If it doesnt find a printer it basically shuts down.  I have tried setting this up using the Print  to file option but it seems to be smart enough to recongnize it's not attached to a hardware printer and gives me an error 57 (I believe this is an internal error code that the author uses) The author wont be able to change the code for months because he's out of the county.  I need a way of capturing this lpt1 output to a file that is fool proof.  I was thinking possible there might be software written that does this.  Perhaps it's the driver I select when I choose "Print to file" I use the Generic/Text option.
Any help with this problem is appreciated.  The Vice President is very sensitive to wasting resources and this particular application goes through reems of paper a day.
A few details; The application is a dos based application, running on Windows 2000 sp4 computer.
It's a gateway that handles all the transactions in and out of our facility and it's always busy.
I have tried this on MS Windows Server 2000/ MS Windows Server 2003 r3 with the result always being the same.  I either have the application shut down and all transactions in and out cease, or the printer wastes thousands of pages a day printing useless documents.
