This depends a lot on what exact version of windows you are talking about. What version do you have installed?

Ballpark, XP with all the bells and whistles needs about 3 gigs of space. Vista might need more like 5 gigs.

If you are running low on hard drive space, you should look into what personal files of yours are eating it up. There are a number of utilities out there to help you catalogue the hard drive space on your system, but my favorites are TreeSize free edition (for 2000/XP), and FolderSizes (for Vista)

http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/
http://www.foldersizes.com/

If you're really strapped for space, consider upgrading the hard drive. They're cheap these days, a 500gb hard drive is around $100. You'll also get a very nice boost in performance, since newer hard drives operate a lot faster than older ones.

i appreciate the freeware but i still would like to know about the RRR file and whether it can be deleted safely!

I'm not 100% sure about the .RRR files, but according to this site:

http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/rrr

If it's big it is most likely a backup of the registry created by Registry Mechanic. Which means it isn't related to windows at all! Do you (or did you in the past) have registry mechanic installed?

You can open the file using a hex editor, or by open it in wordpad and see if you can get any hints from the contents of the file. If the file is 10mb big, don't open it in Notepad - notepad will hang trying to load all the data.

According to [ http://filext.com/ ] filetext.com site:

Rhapzodé is a compiler for Microsoft PowerPoint which enables authors to create, manage and securely distribute their PowerPoint presentations. A Rhapzodé Resource Repository (.RRR) file contains all the meta data for a project. It is an XML compliant file which manages how a compiled PowerPoint is created. An .RRR file contains no content, just directives and pointers to content.

I have not verified this to be true. all i can say if the file is in location like my documents, you can be safe to delete it.

but this site says its from Registry Mechanic program.

hope this helps.

Actually --  this is It turns out that Registry Mechanic (product from PC Tools software)
creates copies of the Windows Registry hive files, when you use the
"optimize registry" facility.

These files are given extension .rrr and
are used when the system boots, so you can't access them using
tools like NotePad.
