Question

help with DOS 6.22 install from cd

Asked by: nscit

Hello,

I've got DOS 6.22 placed on a bootable cd. I've fdisked, created a partition of 2GB and formatted the C: drive. I then run setup.bat off the bootable disc. It begins the install process just fine and runs through the insert disk1 insert disk2 and insert disk3 steps. The STEPUP folder is created on the C: drive but at the end of the process of the DOS extraction I am prompted with:
"MakeSys has determined that your startup hard disk is drive C. Is that correct?" I hit Y.
Then is says "MakeSys is making temporary copies of your system files...
Copying file: C:\IO.SYS
Fatal error: Cannot read file.
The MakeSys utility could not be complete."

Any ideas on why this part is happening?
Thank you for any assistance.

DOS 6 was never ment to be installed from a CD (circa 1994?).  I would suggest borrowing or buying a portable floppy drive ($10) and then installing from the floppies.

You might be able to fudge getting the core DOS files on the hard drive by doing a "sys C: A:"  if you can make a new CD based off the DOS 6 disks here: http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

by: nscitPosted on 2009-10-22 at 07:43:53ID: 25634800

aleinss,
I already have a cd based off of the DOS 6 diskettes.  It is installing fine except for the final steps of copying over the IO.sys, etc.
On my C: drive I see that a folder was created called "stepup" and 129 files have been placed in it.  I see that IO.sy#, IO.sy^ and IO.sy@ are in that folder so I'm not sure why I'm getting the "MakeSys is making temporary copies of your system files...
Copying file: C:\IO.SYS
Fatal error: Cannot read file.
The MakeSys utility could not be complete." error.

Got a usb floppy drive.  Can boot to USB device option on PC but doesn't work so I'd like to do it through bootable CDs that have the DOS floppy info on it.

Thanks.

Right.  The DOS 6 setup bootcode from the setup disks is different then a regular ERD DOS 6.0 boot disk.  The main files that you need to boot DOS 6 are msdos.sys, io.sys and command.com.  The rest of the files you can copy over or uncompress with the expand utility.  So if you remake a CD with the ERD DOS 6 disk from bootdisk.com, you can do a "sys C:" which should make the hard disk DOS bootable and let you boot right to a DOS prompt.  I believe if you are just using the setup disks your options are: install this or reboot...there is no diagnostic command line to work with.

I'm not exactly sure how much "DOS 6" you really need from all 3 disks.  Half of 1 disk is probably dosshell.com...which you likely don't need.

Thank you aleinss

I got the files from bootdisk.com and put them on a bootable cd i made.  Ran the sys c: from the a: drive (cdrom) and it copied the key files over.  I then rebooted and asked for time and date and left me at the c: drive.  I went into the stepup folder and ran makesys and it finished the install of the files to the c: drive.  Then I ran setup and was taken into the blue setup screen to finish the install.

Thanks.

aleinss,

If i could ask you one more thing.  Now that I'm at the setup blue screen.  It wants me to insert floppy discs to copy information off to. "Please label a floppy disk as follow:  UNINSTALL #1, when you are ready hit enter"
Any idea how to get past this?

thanks.

You can try to fool it....copy subst.exe to C: (should be on one of the diskettes and if it is compressed like subst.ex_, use expand to expand it like expand subst.ex_ subst.exe)

Make a dir (mkdir) called C:\temp

Then do a subst A: C:\temp

This should fool it into directing request for the A: drive to C:\temp.

aleinss,

In the c:\stepup folder I see that subst.ex# and subst.ex^ files are already there.  I tried running expand subst.ex_ subst.exe but it said "bad command".
Sorry, could I have just a bit more guidance?  I see where you are going but I must be mistyping something.

Thanks so much again.

by: aleinssPosted on 2009-10-23 at 22:26:09ID: 25650929

If it says bad command or filename, it means that it wasn't copied to the disk or it's not in the search path.

If you cd to C:\ and do a "dir expand*.* /s", does it find anything?  If not, look on the CD and see if you can copy it over.

by: nscitPosted on 2009-10-26 at 09:24:00ID: 25663898

Drats...i think I'm almost there.
Copied the subst.ex# and subst.ex^ files from the c:\stepup folder to the root of C:.
Was able to find the expand.exe file off the net and copied it over to the root of the C: drive so all files are in the correct place I believe.

Ran the expand subst.ex_ subst.exe as you mentioned in a previous post and I get, "Error - Can't open input file: subst.ex_"

Then I was thinking...I did not see any subst.ex_ but I saw both subst.ex# and subst.ex^ so I ran expand subst.ex# subst.exe and it said "input file 'c:\subst.ex# already in expanded format...1 file expanded.  So then I saw it gave me a subst.exe now so I ran
c:\subst a: c:\temp and it just sits there with a blinking cursor...locks up.  I wonder if the subst truely expanded correctly?  Maybe if I expand the subst.ex^ instead?

Any further ideas?  I know you've helped way more than you bargained for.  sorry.

by: aleinssPosted on 2009-10-26 at 09:48:52ID: 25664168

It says it is already expanded, so try renaming it:

ren subst.ex^ subst.exe

Does it run now?

by: nscitPosted on 2009-10-26 at 11:15:20ID: 25665050

Tried renaming the subst.ex# to subst.exe then did the subst a: c:\temp and the cursor just started blinking after the command.  Then renamed back the subst.exe to subst.ex#.  Tried the same thing then with the other subst.ex^ and the same resulted.
I wish they would just give me a straight up subst.exe that works.  Maybe because it's not a true a: floppy drive it locks up.  who know.
more work than it's worth i guess.
thanks for trying with me.

If you run subst.exe with no options or just subst /? it should display something.  If it doesn't do this, it means the executable is corrupted or compressed.

According to this url: http://www.computing.net/answers/dos/want-substexe-/2990.html it is on the 2nd disk of the 6.22 installation and should be compressed in the format of subst.ex_.  I'm not sure why you are seeing subst.ex^ or subst.ex#.

by: aleinssPosted on 2009-10-26 at 13:35:54ID: 25666552

OK, I think I might know where you problem lies.  It sounds like you have the 6.22 step-up version.  Take a look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/116333

I actually hunted up my old DOS 6.22 diskettes (in IMZ format) and subst.ex_ is located there.  So the .ex^ and .ex# appear to be just patch files and not the actual files themselves.

 From http://www.computing.net/answers/dos/where-to-get-dos-622/15895.html:

To use the MS-DOS 6.22 Step-Up, your computer must be running  MS-DOS 6, 6.2, or 6.21 in the same language as this version of the STEPUP.exe file."

If subst.exe isn't on the PC already, it won't upgrade it and if you try you run 6.0's subst in 6.22 you will likely get the error message "incorrect DOS version".    So if you want to run 6.22 you need to get the full install (not upgrade) of 6.22.

When I rename the subst.ex^ or subst.ex# to subst.exe and run subst /? and hit enter it sits where with the blinking cursor

I got to thinking and I found an subst.ex_ on my XP pro pc so I copied that off and over to the PC i'm trying to install dos.  That subst.ex_ when renamed or expanded to subst.exe still gives me the blinking cursor.

I downloaded dos 6.22 from MS's site at : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=96cc3197-b7e5-4b31-badb-ddaac771295f&DisplayLang=en

I extract the disk and this is what I got.

Ahh...ok...I suppose dos 6.22 is still worth something to someone and isn't free on the Internet then huh?  Probably not downloadable?
Thanks.

by: aleinssPosted on 2009-10-26 at 14:31:14ID: 25667145

No, not legally anyways.  Most of what you need can probably be copied from the boot disk at bootdisk.com

1. Run sys C:  when boot from the boot disk

2. Copy everything to C:\dos from the bootdisk

3. Move autoexec.bat, command.com, msdos.sys, io.sys and config.sys to the root of C:\

4. Edit autoexec.bat and add C:\dos to the PATH statement

Do you need DEBUG.EXE?  If you are not a programmer, no.

APPEND.EXE is never used anymore, DBLSPACE.BIN is only used if you compress the drive (and you would be crazy to), DOSKEY.EXE is for key macros, etc.  About 90% of the stuff on the diskettes is stuff you don't need and will never use.

It's not available for free, but it is downloadable. Microsoft still offers it as a download to those with subscriptions to Technet Plus, MSDN, Software Assurance, etc.

Final question!
Before remember I was telling you about how I was in the process of installing DOS 6.22 and was on the blue installation screen and seemed to be almost through except it was asking me for floppy disks to put in the drive incase i wanted to UNINSTALL later on i guess.  Say I made it through that installation and DOS got "installed" or all the files are in the right place on the c: drive.
Is that any different than just copying the key files commands a person will be using all the time from the DOS 6.22 disks onto the c: drive (some on c: root and some in c:\dos as you said)...is DOS 6.22 basically installed after I do that as well or does the FULL INSTALLATION add something else?
thanks for all!
