Question

Network issues

Asked by: BYRONJACKSON

Hi Guys

I ma pulling my hair out!  A few weeks ago we needed to change our fileserver - the old server was taken down and the new server was renamed - same IP address and everything seemed fine.  We use Netsupport DNA and we noticed that clients have fallen off - this was the first sign of somthing screwy happening - we then attempted to ping the offending machines and could not do so.

Strange - no help desk calls from users!  On visiting the offending machines all appeared to be well.  The users had not experienced any down time although some had issues with outbound telnet sessions - ie speed.  I have checked the obvious... XP SP2 Firewall is disabled by policy, RPC is running.... etc etc - Rejoining the machine to the domain appears to fix it for around 20 minutes and then the machine becomes invisible again.  I thought maybe the IP stack had been screwed through the disconnection of the fileserver and filesharing - have reinstalled IP on the machines and joy for a few minutes and then no ball.

The indicator of a problem existing is that the network connections on the machine are not visible... they are when you rejoin the domain.  I need to find out

What may have caused the issue
How to fix the issue before it becomes a major problem

All clients are XP SP2 patched - we are using Server 2003 on the fileserver and all DCS.  Can anyone assist I am running out of ideas.

Look at this thread;

If the SBS was flattened and reinstalled, you have a new domain. Even if
the name was made the same, and all other settings were the same, the
randomly generated Security ID internal to the system is different.

While I can't guarantee that there are no additional issues, to solve this
one.

Use the wizards for all the following. I am away, so I can't give you the
exact terms, but if you look in Server Mangement you will find wizards for
each step.

At the server, remove the TS server from the network and add it back with
any name you like. Use the Add Servers Wizard.

At the server, remove all the computer accounts and add them back. Use
whatever naming convention makes sense to you. WKST01, 02 for example.
Some use CEO, COO, Off_MGR, that kind of name. Others use DACK01, DACK02,
etc.

Now go to each computer and remove it from the domain and make it part of a
workgroup. Reboot.

Now use the connect computer wizard from each work station and the TS to
rejoin the domain.

Open IE, in the address bar type:

http://servername/connectcomputer

Hi thankyou you all this appears to be related to the client as RPC and its associated are not starting.  We can fix this but the problems appear to be getting worse.  All DC's pass DC Diag /v no worries.  The symptoms appear to be slow logon over twenty minutes! we cannot see the network cards etc- Any ideas

This is the DNS server address misconfiguration .When you installed the new file server on the network then check the dns server address. If you are using the Internal DNS server then ISP dns address should be in forwarders tab of dns management cosole and primary dns of server also self Ip address and on clicnet pc primary dns also IP address of the dns server and alternative is ISP.

Regards,

V.K.

Hi - Io may have confused the issue here - sorry!  but I am alone in my resolution of this problem and attempting to find resolution.  The last change on the network was the installation of a new fileserver - DNS is UNIX BIND and all is working NSLOOKUP working well from all other than the affected machines.  It would appear that something - possibly netsuppot screwed our IP stack on around 70 terminals and now we cannot see them.

On visiting the machines it was noticed that the RPC and RPC locater services were in starting mode causing a severe delay on log on.  We can fix this on the majority of the machines but the inbound connections are not binding to the IP stack.  We need an urgent fix to start the RPC service and keep it running.

Thanks for all of the suggestion thus far!

Guys it turned out to be a corrupt policy that effectively shut down the Net logon service. The fix from Microsoft was to delete a registry key so that we could gain access to the offending machines unjoin and reestablish trusts:

Please delete the registry value below and then restart the problematic machine:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Security
Value: Security
Value Type: REG_BINARY

I have given points to all who assisted as way of thank you!
