I have selected the Automatic Updates option "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" in the My Computer properties panel. I DON'T want to turn on automatic updates, I just want it to tell me when they are available and then make it easy for me to MANUALLY download and MANUALLY install them.
My computer will show me the Windows Update icon and I can click on it and have it download the updates. That works fine. However it never displays the icon in the task bar telling me that I have updates to install once they are dowloaded.
Another symptom is that when I go to the Windows Update site and try to see what updates there are to download, it cranks for a long time. I found a program called 'Dial-a-fix' that helped with that, but it seems to be a one time fix. Why should it sit there for a long time trying to figure out what needs to be updated?
So I'd like to know:
a) Can I fix the problem with automatic updates so that it puts up the icon that let's me install?
b) If not, can I find those downloaded updates on my machine and then manually install them?
I think that the answer to b) is in the question: "location of downloads for Automatic Updates" in the Windows XP Operating System zone, but I don't have access to search questions.
