100% CPU on svchost.exe and can't run windows update

Hi Everyone,

I have a PC that is getting 100% CPU on svchost.exe. This is giving the PC a big performance hit.

Another issue is it's unable to get through the windows update website. When it gets to the screen that says "searching for needed updates" the green bar goes on forever. A scan with MBSA shows its at a severe risk.

I've already tried the following:
-windows defender scan - nothing found
-SAV scan - nothing found
-trend micro housecall scan - nothing found
-looked in regedit for windows "run once" and "run" nothing unusual
-updated to IE 7
-cleared browser cookies, history, etc.

When I open task manager and sort by CPU svchost is at the top - cranked to 90-99% percent. But it takes a minute after startup. Then I can kill the process and it goes away for a "while" freeing up the PC so you can work normally. But the process comes back intermittently. Not sure where do go from here, thanks in advance for any suggestions.Start Free Trial
