Question

yellow shield icon in my task bar

Asked by: JAToubes

I am running Windows XP home version, with sp2 .
Just recently I am getting that yellow icon shield prompting me to download and install the latest updates. I did that and the icon won't disappear, keeps insisting that the update needs to be installed.

I went to the windows/office update site and did a manual  scan and downloaded the item with success.  It was office service pak 2  or something like that.  I also checked that  after re-scanning that the site detected it actually installed.

After doing that..  and not results .. I tried to uncheck that particular  update, but that didn't work, keeps coming back..   So finally I contacted Microsoft help and they gave me this elaborate 3 page thing , including re installing all the Office 2003 solftware, which I reluctantly did.  Then updated it and still  the dang icon is there, claiming I need to load the updates, that are already there.

I am of the belief tht the notification program has a glitch somewhere that isn't recognizing that update is  lnstalled.

Anyone have a solution for it , other than either getting used to it going to be there until I upgrade to a new machine or I turn off the update service ( which is sometihing I really don't want to do.)

I am using ZoneAlarm Pro Internet Security suite 7.   The problem began shortly after I  downloaded PC Pitstop's optimizer.  I rolled back via restore and then restored the damage it did, and then uninstalled it.  I have defragmented the drive as well as a scan disk.

not yet.
the issue seems that the updates are installed.  however, the problem is that whatever updates the log file or whatever, isn't doing its thing to let the icon unload.

I down loaded the file and installed from the desk top.  got the notice that the update has already been applied, yet the icon is still in the task bar.

by: JAToubesPosted on 2007-05-05 at 22:25:36ID: 19038242

tried to click ignore the up date, then don't show this again.. it doesn't remember that option either.
just seems that there is a setting or a corrupt auto update file somewhere.

I've had this problem on a few of my PC's - athough I use WSUS

I get the feeling you've already tried my solution - but I should post it for referrence:

>Double click the shield icon
>Choose Custom Install
>On the list of updates (which will most likely only contain one update anyway), untick the one that keeps on installing (in a loop) and click Close/Install/Download
>When prompted, tell WU never to remind you or download that update again.

Have you rebooted?

by: JAToubesPosted on 2007-05-06 at 07:53:24ID: 19039012

I have done both.  I have even used something called WUfix.bat;
1.  I have rebooted multiple times, after each update.
2.  I went to their site and downloaded the update to the computer and when I installed that the load indicated that it was already applied.
3. Did the "ignore" on this end as well as on the update site.  That is interesting. The update site claims it has been downloaded and installed, but I can ignore  things if I need to.  However, my computer icon won't let me ignore it.  I uncheck the box (under custom), then when I get the ignore this forever, I do that, hit 'ok"  and it is back in a few moments.   I wonder if that portion of the program is screwy.

I can turn off the auto updates, then choose to hide the icon.    I don't think the problem is with Office 2003.

My computer is on 24/7  and I use it to upload weather data to various locations.  I have a fast connection.  I did check my firewall and IE 7  and we are fine there in fact I have run the program for a short with the firewalls down and antivirus turned off ( shudder )  and it made no differnece.  Cleaned the registry using jv 16 power tools, a spyware scan, spybot and Trojan Hunter 4. just in case I had a visitor.  no luck.

Maybe if I wore an  albatross on my neck in pennance or burned a memory module to the computer god maybe that might work?

lol, run a chkdsk there is probably some files inconsistancy if you didnt reboot correctly and didnt install the updates when offered Vista has a cold now.
run chkdsk /F to heal your disk
http://itsvista.com/2007/03/chkdsk/

In xp we would run a regestry cleaner such as regestry mechanic.
http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/
As I stated in my ealrier there maybe a regestry key overlapping.
Look in the starup group and dis-able the culprit.
stop the windows updates temporarily then run some scans reboot a few times

I have registry first aid and will give that a try...  what is the worse that could happen?    ok being attacked by a band of rabid rabbits...

by: JAToubesPosted on 2007-05-09 at 20:09:22ID: 19062538

ok.. final word from microsoft... well two one they referred the question to someone else.  The answer was to turnoff the auto update and check in weekly manually to see if there were any updates.  Now that makes no sense.

So  I am hiding the icon and thanks for suggestions, but no one had a solution such as maybe dealing with the icon or device that actually sends out the notifications, such as a setting in the registry, log file or even how to replace or reinstall the program.

So.. I am closing the question as unsolvable by earthlings..

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2007-05-09 at 22:39:03ID: 19062898

Well I did offer you those old memory modules    ;-)

I would consider hiding the tray icon like that more of a workaround, but as long as you're happy...

I have a gig of memory, so  I as I appreciate the offer of the memory modules... I cannot use them.  No more slots.  Maybe the next machine..

I am closing this for now.  Did get another suggestion from MS.   Remove all office programs and start again.  Gee that is kind of removing the tires when the engine light comes on in the SUV.

Perhaps it is a registry problem,

i don't think you got the 'joke'

you: "Maybe if I wore an  albatross on my neck in pennance or burned a memory module to the computer god maybe that might work?"
me: "i've got some old 4mb EDO modules if you want    :)"

btw - EDO ram is the stuff that 486's used (prior to Pentium 1's that used SD-RAM)

thanks for for the poinks  :)
