Windows 2003 Server C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads Directory - What is it?

Asked by allrassitlanadmin in Microsoft Operating Systems, Windows 2003 Server

I am trying to free up some disk space on my Windows 2003 Server and have found 1.05GB of files in the C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads folder with 88 objects in it (69 folders, 19 files) or various random names (E.g. c4150b17c4bd2cdf6bcd03dcd45b1003). Is it safe to delete these files and folders and what are the repercussions of doing so?
They seem to be relating to Windows Updates.
The server was recently upgraded from W2KS to W2K3S.
It runs as one of two DC's in the environment.
I was thinking of deleting these after taking a copy of them, monitor the server and if there is anything untoward going on in the coming days I can always copy the items back over.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
