Losing or gaining time is not always an indicator of a failing battery, if the time keeps reverting to a previous date that is a better indicator.
If you do want to change the battery id is very straigtt forward. If you have made any custom shnahes to the BIOS you may want to write these down as they may be lost if you remove the battery, other than that - no special precautios - just remove the old battery and replace it wilth a new one. - Probably best to open up the machine - get the battery number and order a new battery so you can just do a quick swap when the times comes.

FIRST you should unplug the system from power source and only after that you can replace the battery
