Question

FTP.exe blocking Service Pack Install

Asked by: stacystyles

Good Morning:

I have a Windows 2003 Standard server and I am trying to install either SP1 or SP2.  With either one when I try to install it I get an error saying that something is using FTP.exe.  I have removed FTP and rebooted and I still get the same error.  Has anyone seen this beofre?

Thanks,

Hi stacystyles,

Can you please post what exact error do you receive? Did you check event log for any error?

Windows Event log ID 4373
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installation failed.  An internal error occured

Event Id 20
Installation failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8007054f: Windows Server 2003 Service pack 2

Then the error I get from the Installer is:
The File C:\windows\system32\ftp.exe is open or in use by another application.
Close all other applications and then click retry.

Where are you trying to install it from, the full file OR the Microsoft site OR WSUS ?
If the latter try downloading the full file to your HDD and install from there.

I have this happen on all three, full file, The site and WSUS.

Kill the ftp.exe process in the Task Manager.

by: stacystylesPosted on 2007-07-20 at 05:38:58ID: 19530367

It is not running there.

by: marco_peereboomPosted on 2007-07-20 at 05:56:32ID: 19530465

Are you logged in as an Administrator?
Check the 'Show processes from all users' option in the Task Manager processes tab.

Is there any service running that makes use of the ftp.exe file?

Remote Desktop users not logging of from their session but just locking their session.......

Being really bad, make sure that only you can access the file.
Change the File Security parameters for ftp.exe and soon enough it will crash somewhere else.
