What is the best compressed format to have photos

Hi,

I have 100's of photos taken in my digital camera which are in JPG format.Now my question is i want to have these files in the least possible size with the best resolution.At present each file is 4.5 mb.
How can i change all these file extensions at one shot with the best resolution.
