What is the Difference Between Windows Update and Microsoft Update (from Windows XP vantage point)?

Asked by montecarlo1987 in Microsoft Operating Systems, Windows XP Operating System

Hello. When I open the "All Programs" link in Windows XP, I see that above the program listing (above that faint horizontal line that separates services from applications, if you want to classify it that way), I have links for Microsoft Update and Windows Update. What is the difference between the two? They both sound the same to me? They appear to take me to the same place. Microsoft Update opens up a website: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us . Windows Update opens up a website:  http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us  . Yes, the same website. How did this happen, getting both links for the same thing? Can I delete one if they both do the same thing? Which one would you advise? ...or do I both must have them? Please reply. Thanks! Start Free Trial
