System Tray speaker icon disappears at each startup

System Tray speaker icon disappears whenever I startup. The Control Panel Sound & Audio Device Properties shows a tick in "Place volume icon in Taskbar" all the time.
I have to remove tick, click apply, put tick back in, click apply, and the speaker icon appears again in Taskbar.
But, next time I startup the icon is not there, but the tick is still there to show it on taskbar.
Running XP with SP2, automatic Microsoft updates, with full Norton package and Zone alarm.
