The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

XP Pro installation cannot copy files from installation disk
Tags: Microsoft, Windows XP, Pro
I am trying do a repair installation of Windows XP Pro on a Dell machine.  Problem is that during the installation it is reported that certain files cannot be found in the installation disk.  When I browse the disk, the files are clearly there, but the installation program refuses to copy them.  In order to continue the installation I have to press "Cancel", but clearly the installation is faulty.

I have received new memory from Dell, as well as a replacement Windows disk, so it is not either the memory or the media.  It also happens with the SAME files every time.

I will try anything, please!

Have you tried a different CDROM?

Try blowing the CDROM out with compressed air.

02.14.2008 at 12:51PM PST, ID: 20897027
I have tried using another optical drive to perform the installation, with exactly the same results.  The fact that the installation stops in the same file makes me think it is not related to the drive, no?

Sure it is the same version CD as the currently installed OS?

Sounds to me like you have a scratched or dirty disk / disk drive, can you try a different disk or drive?

it could be that if you are trying to do a repair of windows, the files that cannot be copied are not needed as they are already installed on your computer.

02.14.2008 at 01:00PM PST, ID: 20897096
I HAVE tried a different drive, and a new installation disk from DELL.  The comment about files already in the computer not needing to be copied would apply to many more files than the ones involved (15-20 or so), I imagine.

02.14.2008 at 01:01PM PST, ID: 20897103

Can you supply the exact file it's hung up on and the error that is displayed?

02.14.2008 at 01:05PM PST, ID: 20897132
How is your cdrom setup? Is it on the same controller as your drive? or on a seperate one? You should have it on secondary/master. If it is primary/slave you could have an issue.

If you have a way to copy the i386 folder to the drive or another accessible partition you may want to try that also (then browse to that for source). I have seen some instances where data will not read from cd, but if you copy the disk to a drive it will read during aninstall fine.

The first file on which the installation stops is migregdb.exe.  The error dialogue simply asks for the path to the file that is needed, because it cannot find it in the \i386 directory of the installation disk.  But when you click on Browse, the file is clearly there and in that directory.  It simply will not be copied.

02.14.2008 at 01:16PM PST, ID: 20897225

Try pointing the repair path to this location:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

02.14.2008 at 01:18PM PST, ID: 20897244

Here is another possible location that file may reside:
C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB902400\SP2QFE

02.14.2008 at 07:23PM PST, ID: 20899156
I tried copying the installation disk to the hard drive and pointing to that directory when the files cannot be read from the installation disk, but to no avail. The installation keeps stopping on the same files and saying it cannot find them on the installation disk, even if they are listed there when you browse for them. The only solution to continue the installation is to cancel the copying of the files individually, but that leads to an incomplete installation.

02.15.2008 at 04:36AM PST, ID: 20901111
Have you tried doing a clean installation of windows on a spare HDD? I think it is a problem with your current installation. Happened to me before. After 3 hours of trying i gave up, formatted the system and reinstalled it, and it worked fine!

Also, mine could not copy about 4 files.

02.15.2008 at 04:46AM PST, ID: 20901152
Have you tried running chkdsk from the Recovery Console to check that all is OK with your HDD?

02.15.2008 at 04:52AM PST, ID: 20901192
In my case its about 30 files that are not copied.  I have been desperately trying to resolve the issue without a clean install because I don't want to have to reinstall and re-customize all my applications and maybe have the same problem happen during the fresh installation.  But there may be no other choice.  I have 2 hard drives on a RAID configuration and could break the RAID and do a fresh install in one of them and see if that will work.  That should be a good test, no?

02.15.2008 at 04:53AM PST, ID: 20901203
Yes, I did a few days ago.  Took forever and found "one or more" errors, but in the end said the drive was OK.

02.15.2008 at 04:55AM PST, ID: 20901210
Depends on the RAID level, if you are using RAID 0 breaking the setup will render the data unusable.  Can you check that the disks are ok/not flaging errors in the BIOS?

02.15.2008 at 04:58AM PST, ID: 20901224
You mean getting into the BIOS and checking that the disks are properly recognized?  If that is what you mean, then there are no errors.

02.15.2008 at 05:03AM PST, ID: 20901248
I mean checking consistancy in the RAID BIOS if possible, Unfortunatly I can't tell you exactly what to look for as I don't have experiance with Dell Desktops.  Most RAID adapters I've worked with will let you run a kind of "chkdsk" from the RAID configuration, unless you've configured the RAID at the software level?

Just out of interest what is the reson for doing the repair in the first place?

02.17.2008 at 01:24PM PST, ID: 20915780
The problem was related to the fact that I was trying to do a REPAIR installation of Windows to an installation that was clearly too far gone.  Finally decided to take the plunge and reformat the hard drive and do a fresh installation.  It went perfectly--no copy error messages-- so I have spent the last three days reinstalling all my software and recreating my settings.

Thanks for all your suggestions, though.

I know how you feel. Like i said it happened to me too. Nothing you can do! i looked everywhere!
