The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

OS deployment issues in SCCM 2007

Tags: Microsoft, SCCm 2007, 2007
I have just installed SCCM 2007 on window 2003 and I am facing a problem with OS deployment.
During the image capture, the client is unable to get an IP address from the DHCP server. Th support duys told me that there is a delay in DHCP server responding to the IP request. I can interrupt the  capture and do an ipconfig/renew and get the IP address and the capture continues.
I do the same during the image transfer to the server.

Do i need to make any changes to the DHCP server to avoid this.?
Any help in this is highly appreciated.

Hi-

We had the same problem. (Strangely, we had the same SCCM deployment on different domains within the same forest where we didnt face this problem.)

As you mentioned, the reason is the DHCP delay. If you run a network monitor or any sniffer to monitor packets sent between your DHCP server and your reference or target computer, youll see that DHCP is not assigning an IP address to any of these computers in a timely manner.

I was looking for the reason, and there are many things you need to consider: your DHCP configuration (subnet mask used/ scope options), and tour network devices configuration- like switches/routers (PVID, trunks& etc.).

Anyway, to solve this problem you have two options. The first one- which is harder- is to modify the answer file of Winpe and the image you are deploying by adding ipconfig/renew to both of them. The second solution is easier- and for me, it solved the problem: I reinstalled my DHCP server on a different server. The only change I made to its configuration was changing the subnet mask of the scope I used- I changed it from 20 bit subnet to class B/16 bit subnet, because I doubted Winpes ability for recognizing supernets.
I wish this information is useful...............

Unforunately I won't be in a position to reinstll the DHCP server.

One of the reasons being that we have an IP PABX system and I am not sure if the phones will pick up a different IP address and hence a different extension when hey get a new IP address.

how about changing the scripts. Is there a way to do it:

Dont worry about the IP PABX system because the extensions are not based on the obtained IP address (otherwise youd have a static IP address for each device- and thered be no use for a DHCP). You can refer to the PABX vendor for this issue. Dont worry about changing the IP addresses of your devices- its very simple to move your DHCP server database from your old DHCP to the new one (command line).

Or if you want to manipulate the answer files, you have to use the IMAGEX utility to mount WinPE and change the answer file (during the capture phase), then you have to use WAIK to mount the captured image and change the answer file for the image you want to deploy (during the deployment phase)

Dear ITPRO,

Thanks for your response....

I am curently using 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.2.175 as the scope with subnet mask as 255.255.252.0.

What should I do on the new  DHCP server so that I don;t have the same delay issu

First of all, to diagnose the problem, you have to know the source of the delay.

Like I said before, it could be your DHCP. In my case, I replaced it- and dont worry about replacing it- its very simple and youll lose nothing. Check out this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325473/ . Or your network devices might be the reason behind your problem, and its not an easy task to diagnose the network devices. I suggest trying to attach your reference computer directly to the switch that connects your DHCP server to the LAN, then start capturing the image. If a delay still exists then you can be sure your DHCP is causing it (replace). If not, good luck with diagnosing the network devices&

HI,

Sorry for the delay,

I just plugged in the new PC in the switch which has the dhcp server and bingo!, it worked. Even though i know that the internmediate switch is the problem, i don't know the reason and how to fix it.

BUt still, the issue, for me, is resolved an i award you th epoints
