The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Display Properties Appearance has reverted to "Windows Classic" from "Windows XP" style windows and buttons.  How do I restore to XP style?
Tags: Windows XP Display Properties
For some reason after a reboot, my display properties appearance reverted to "Windows Classic Style" windows and buttons.   Before it was "Windows XP Style" with option in drop down box to change to "Windows Classic Style".  Now, it's only "WIndows Classic Style" with no option in drop down box to switch back to "Windows XP Style"  What do I do to recover the "Windows XP Style" of windows and buttons (Windows XP default)?

Try This

Start > Run > Services.msc > Scroll Down For "Themes" Services > Double Click On "Themes" > On the General Tab > Set The "Startup Type" As 'Automatic' > Below Near "Service Status" Click 'Start'

You will need your xp cd to do this.
Try doing Start -> Run and typing: sfc /scannow
This verifies all protected windows files are the originals.
Not sure this will work but lets try.

If that doesn't help - try:

187. Restore Themes Functionality

It turns out that the solution I grade as complete did not persist.  After a reboot the Classic View problem returned.  Subsequent attempts to apply the same registry fix (#271) did not have any affect.  Application of the next suggested fix (#181) actually made it worse by eliminating (greying out) the "Windows and Buttons" drop down box under Display Properties.Appearance.   I guess I'll have to repost problem with new twist of "how to make this solution persist past a reboot" and "don't try #181"

Corrections on #181 - Should have been #187 per Genius' last post.

Your luna.msstyles file may have got corrupted in c:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna
If you have a Windows CD - open a command prompt, browse to the cd/dvd drive,
(make sure that you create a folder in C: called temp first)

D:\>cd i386
D:\i386\>expand luna.ms_ c:\temp

Rename luna.ms in C:\temp to luna.msstyles

Rename the original file in c:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna to luna.msstyles.old , then copy the expanded file into the same folder.
Apply the theme - and reboot. See if the issue is resolved.

Okay.   The correction you suggested restored the Windows and Buttons drop down box in Display Properties.Appearance but the box is back to containing only the Windows Classic style choice.  Applying #271 registry fix does nothing (that I can tell).   I've tried reboot after installation of #271, but still nothing but choice of Windows Classic Style (no Windows XP Style available in drop down box).   This is really odd, because it worked find the first time after reading your suggestion.   Then after reboot, it was back to the nothing but Classic View.   That's when I tried to apply #187 and got into problem that your previous suggestion corrected.   So, now I'm back to where I was originally when I first posted, "how to get WIndows XP Style windows and buttons back?"   I was sure your answer did it, but alas I'm still stuck with only Classic View style available.   Any suggestions or should I repost?   BTW - devil_himself's suggestion didn't work.  Neither did MaduKp.  and235100 worked at first but did not persist.

Searched the Forum, and found this thread:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_21626972.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+classic+reboot+recov+revert+style

Net of this fix for this problem is "...Go to your temp folder and rename luna.ms_ to luna.msstyles. Double click on it to set your appearance to XP to see if it works."    That corrected the problem and so far seems to be persisting.   So, and235100's suggestion to restore the luna.msstyles file was correct up to the point where I should have just clicked on it.   Still don't know why the registry fix #271 worked the first time but not the second.  I'd advise anyone to try that simple correction first before resorting to the luna file restoration.   Anyway, all seems well now.
