The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

KB944533 will not install
Tags: Microsoft, Windows Update, Windows XP, Windows XP KB944533-IE7 installation failed.
My WSUS server is trying to push down KB944533 to all of my XP workstations. However, none of them can successfully install this patch. Everyone is prompted for the installation, but it always fails. I found one article that recommends disabling any real-time AV scanning so I have done that prior to the install, but still no luck. I'm pasting in the exact Event Viewer messages below:

Hi,
Just a quick observation, the error is saying Access is denied, perhaps the users when logged on on the workstations don't have permissions to install or edit the InternetExplorer settings etc.

That may be the case, but I'm looking for a solution as to how to give them the needed access. All users are local admins on their workstations. If you can provide more specific suggestions it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Are you wsus clients at SP2?

A couple of things to try:

Run chkdsk /f on a couple of the stations - to make sure that data corruption/security identifiers isn't the problem.

Download the update from here manually - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B15A6506-02DD-43C2-AEF4-E10C1C76EE97&displaylang=en (this is the correct patch - but the KBs are different)
Then try an install like that - the copy WSUS downloaded may be corrupted.

Also - could you check that the local administrator group on the stations has access to C:\Windows\system32\dllcache on their computer(s) ?

Yes, all WSUS clients are XP Pro SP2. I ran chkdsk /f, but no security errors were displayed. I also tried installing the patch you provided a URL for, and it gave me the same "access denied" error message.

The strange thing is, the updates from WSUS finally installed themselves successfully at their scheduled time today at 12 p.m. I signed in, I had the "recently updated" pop-up, and in examining the Event Viewer I see that KB944533 was successful. My problem appears to be resolved (at least on this one workstation, but I don't understand how. The only difference I can see is that the patch would not install itself while my AD username was signed in, but instead it only installed itself after the PC had been rebooted, during it's scheduled installation time (12 p.m.) while there were no users signed in. Does this make any sense?

Are manual updates allowed in your wsus implementation/policy?
Is you AD username set up as a local or domain administrator?

The other possibility of course, is that you have certain software running when logged on that is conflicting with that particular update - but when no one is logged on - the install is running as SYSTEM - so there is no "logged on" user as such.
