computer freezes or hangs up for a few seconds every few minutes

I will be working on my computer problem free and then all of sudden it will freeze for about 30 seconds and then it will work fine for a few minutes and the the same thing happens.
OS  XP 64 sp2
Asus Motherboard m2n4-sli  all temp readings and voltages seem normal.

I leave task manager running and I do not see a program that is causing the freeze since the computer freezes or hangs before anything can show up.

Some days it will work for hours with out the problem and other days it happens quite regularly.

I am not sure how to diagnose such and intermitent problem.

I do not see any chronic errors in the event viewer.
